Auckland Garden Maintenance Calendar: What to Do in Every Season

Auckland's mild, humid, subtropical-leaning climate is a gift and a discipline. Things grow fast here, which means a garden left for a season can get away from you quickly. Here is a simple month-by-month rhythm we use to keep Auckland gardens looking their best all year.

Spring (September to November)

This is the busy season. Growth surges, so mowing steps up to weekly or fortnightly. Feed lawns and garden beds, top up mulch before the soil dries, and get ahead of weeds while they are small. It is the right time to plant most natives and perennials so they establish before summer. Prune spring-flowering shrubs after they finish blooming.

Summer (December to February)

The focus shifts from growing to keeping. Water deeply and less often rather than a daily sprinkle, ideally early morning. Mulch earns its keep now by holding moisture and keeping roots cool. Keep edges crisp and hedges trimmed, and watch for pests that thrive in the warmth. Avoid heavy pruning in the peak heat.

Autumn (March to May)

Autumn is the gardener's secret weapon in Auckland. The soil is still warm and the rain returns, so it is the best window of the year to plant trees and shrubs and to lay new lawn. Clear fallen leaves before they smother the grass, aerate compacted lawns, and overseed any thin patches. Cut back spent perennials.

Winter (June to August)

Growth slows, so this is the season for structure. Prune deciduous trees and roses while they are dormant. It is the ideal time for the bigger landscaping jobs, paving, retaining walls and decks, because the garden is not in full growth and the ground work is easier to stage. Keep paths clear of moss and slip hazards with a wash-down.

The one rule that matters most

Little and often beats a once-a-year blitz. A garden touched on a regular schedule never becomes the overwhelming weekend project. Many of our Remuera and Epsom clients are on a fortnightly or monthly visit for exactly this reason. If you would rather not track the calendar yourself, that is precisely what an ongoing maintenance plan is for.
